If you’ve been ordered onto the NSW Alcohol Interlock Program, one of your first questions is probably: how much is this going to cost me? The answer involves several components — and the total can vary significantly depending on your provider and the length of your program.
This guide breaks down every cost you should expect.
The Four Cost Components
1. Installation Fee (One-Off)
This is the fee charged when the device is fitted to your vehicle. At Interlock Sydney, we keep installation competitive — typically in the range of:
- Standard vehicles: $150–$250
- European or complex wiring: $200–$350
The installation includes the handset unit, all wiring, calibration, and the mandatory SSI G4 Photo ID camera module (required by NSW RMS).
2. Monthly Monitoring / Device Lease Fee
This is the ongoing cost of having the device on your vehicle. It typically covers:
- Device lease (you don’t own the unit)
- Data monitoring by the provider
- Compliance reporting to Transport for NSW
Typical range: $120–$180 per month
Smart Start Interlocks is known for being one of the most competitive providers in NSW on monthly fees.
3. Monthly Service Fee
Every 30–60 days (depending on your program conditions) your device must be serviced at an approved centre. This involves downloading the data log, recalibrating the device, and submitting compliance reports.
Some providers bundle this into the monthly fee; others charge separately. Expect:
- Bundled (all-in monthly): $140–$200/month
- Unbundled service visit: $50–$100 per visit, on top of the lease fee
4. Removal Fee (One-Off)
When your mandatory period ends and Transport for NSW approves removal, there is a final removal fee:
- Typical removal fee: $100–$200
Total Cost by Program Length
Based on competitive mid-range pricing:
| Program Length | Installation | Monthly × Months | Removal | Total Estimate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 months | $200 | $160 × 12 | $150 | ~$2,270 |
| 24 months | $200 | $160 × 24 | $150 | ~$4,190 |
| 48 months | $200 | $160 × 48 | $150 | ~$8,030 |
These are estimates — your actual cost will vary. Always get a written quote before committing.
What’s NOT Included
Watch out for costs that are sometimes hidden:
- Missed service visit fee — if you miss an appointment, providers typically charge a reconnection or re-attendance fee ($50–$150)
- Transfer fee — if you change vehicles, the device must be moved or a new one installed
- Lockout recovery — if your device enters lockout mode, you may need the Smart Start emergency line (1300 256 900), and in some cases a service visit is required to reset it
How to Compare Interlock Providers in NSW
Transport for NSW maintains a list of approved providers. When comparing:
- Get a total cost quote — ask for installation + 12 months of monthly fees + removal all-in
- Check the service interval — 60-day servicing is cheaper overall than 30-day
- Ask about concession pricing — if you hold a Health Care Card, concession rates may apply
- Check the service centre location — a closer centre saves you time and travel cost monthly
Can You Get Financial Help?
Yes — several options exist:
- Salvation Army Interlock Assistance: subsidises costs for people in genuine financial hardship (see our financial assistance guide)
- Concession card discounts: available from some providers
- Monthly payment plans: most providers allow monthly billing rather than upfront lump sums

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy the interlock device instead of leasing it? No — all interlock devices in NSW must be leased through an approved provider. This ensures the device is calibrated and maintained to regulatory standards.
Does insurance cover interlock costs? Standard car insurance does not cover interlock program costs. Some legal expense insurance policies may offer partial coverage — check your policy.
What happens if I can’t afford to pay? Contact your provider immediately. Missing payments can lead to the device being deactivated, which would put you in breach of your licence conditions. Most providers will work with you on a payment arrangement.
